COURSE DESCRIPTION: Dr. Geller, a pioneer in behavior-based safety, has taken his thinking to a new level. People-Based Safety (PBS) integrates the best of behavior-based and person-based safety for greater effectiveness at enriching a culture and preventing injuries. Rather than telling people what not to do to remain safe, it gives people knowledge and tools to increase personal choice, ownership, and true empowerment. This, Dr. Geller believes, is how you sustain safe behavior.

At the heart of PBS is the need for us to view each other as people – rather than objects or a means to an end. And in safety, people can indeed turn into objects – statistics on record-keeping forms, signatures on policies, or when a behavior-based safety process turns into a numbers game of "counting the observations" or “calculating a percent-safe score.” PBS requires a sincere, honest appreciation of other people, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the internal feelings, needs and perceptions of other people. Each person's uniqueness and individuality must be recognized and appreciated.

At the end of this session, participants will understand:

  • What are the differences between behavior-based safety and people-based safety?
  • How does people-based safety overcome limitations of the interpersonal observation process required in behavior-based safety?
  • What are the seven basic principles of people-based safety?
  • How does people-based safety bring out the best of a work force?
  • Why is it better to be a success seeker than a failure avoider?
  • How should recognition be delivered and received?
  • What is self-persuasion and how is this relevant to long-term behavior change?
  • What is the drawback of making safety-related behavior a habit?
  • What are the essential ingredients of an effective safety coaching process?
  • What are the ACTS components of PBS—Acting, Coaching, Thinking, and Seeing?
