When goals are too broad, focus strictly on outcomes or are perceived as impossible to achieve, workers tune them out – and you lose credibility as a manager. Experienced safety professionals agree, goals based on wishful thinking are worthless – even dangerous. Saying that you want zero injuries for the year is a nice thought, but meaningless as a tool to help you improve safety performance.

Bob holds both the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA) designations. He is also a Department of Homeland Security Instructor.
