Coaching, Paying and Retaining Star Performers: Why they're different. What they need.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of computer programmers at Bell Laboratories showed that the star performers outperformed moderate performers by a margin of 8-1. In any other job you could name, that ratio is at least 3 or 4 to one. Star performers are special, and they know it.

But does your company know it? Do the bosses who supervise your stars know it? And even if they're aware of the value stars deliver, do they know how to coach, pay and retain top performers? Problem is, you often learn the answer to that question in exit interviews, when your stars have chosen to move on.

This course focuses on the unique challenges of managing top performers. Stars deliver more value because they’re talented, self-motivated and result-driven. On the flip side, they can be demanding and intolerant, particularly if they feel they’re shouldering too much of the load without being adequately rewarded. Fact is, star performers can be incredibly productive or incredibly disruptive – it all depends on how they're managed.

This course will provide both a conceptual framework and specific tools managers can use to keep star performers motivated and excited about helping your organization achieve its goals. Participants will learn:

  • The single most disastrous assumption that a manager can make about a star
  • The #1 reason star performers lose their motivation
  • The #1 strategy for keeping stars engaged and making them feel that your company is the best vehicle for achieving their career goals
  • The "Star Competency Framework," a model to help you identify star performers and systematically create opportunities to advance their careers. The model tracks four key performance categories:
    1. self-awareness
    2. strategic / critical thinking
    3. achievement-orientation, and
    4. relating with others
  • Coaching strategies that bond star performers to their team
  • The right — and wrong — ways to use training and development opportunities to motivate star performers
  • Common mistakes & myths that leave you vulnerable to losing your stars
  • The #1 thing star performers REALLY care about when it comes to compensation
  • Base compensation and bonus strategies for retaining top performers — what works and what doesn't.
